Parrot Training

It is really important to train your companion parrot so that you and your parrot can have a happy life together. A parrot that is untrained can bite, scream and feather pick. Many a parrot is abused or rescued because the owner did not take the time to train him. A parrot is an intelligent and adaptable creature. It deserves the benefits of training and an owner who is willing to make that commitment. It is capable of learning certain behaviors that will help to make him a cherished member of the family.

Parrots like to be part of a flock. If trained properly they will be a delightful part of your human flock. There are three basic commands that every parrot should be trained to know, step up, to come onto your hand or arm from the top of their cage and to step onto your hand or arm from inside their cage. These are just the basic training commands that all parrots should know. There are of course so many more behaviors a parrot can be trained to do. The more time spent training the closer the bond you and your parrot will have.

There are certain behaviors that are natural to a parrot and not trained. Parrots scream in the early morning and at dusk. An unhappy untrained parrot could scream all day. Parrots tend to bond with one person. A well trained and socialized parrot will accept others happily.  Parrots are trained with positive reinforcement, treats and repetition. Some will learn quicker than others. The trainer must be patient.

If your parrot has developed some unwanted behavior with patience and the proper training it is possible to correct. A parrot can be trained to talk, do tricks, sing , dance, learn colors, count, the list is endless. There are many books written on parrot training along with many websites. Be kind to your bird and learn as much as possible about the different training techniques and philosophies.
