Macaw Parrots
Macaw parrots can make wonderful pets. They are intelligent and can be trained to do simple and some complex tricks. Macaw parrots are very affectionate and love to have their cheeks and necks scratched. There are several types of Macaws such as, the Blue and Gold, Scarlet Macaw, Green-winged Macaw, Military Macaw
and the Hyacinth Macaw. Macaw parrots are the largest in size in the parrot family. There are also
miniature macaws which include the Severe, Yellow-collared, Hahns, Noble, Illigers and the Red-bellied Macaw.

The Hyacinth Macaw parrot is the largest and can be as long as forty inches. They have deep blue feathers which are off set with bright yellow markings around the eyes and cheeks.  The beaks of the Hyacinth Macaw parrot are extremely powerful but if treated with respect they can be gentle and affectionate even with strangers.  Of all the Macaw Parrots the Hyacinth are quite expensive and it would not be unusual to pay  $7,000 to $8,000 for a hand fed baby.

The Blue and Gold Macaw parrot is the most commonly kept macaw because of it availability and personality.  At maturity this macaw parrot can reach 32 to 33 inches.

Blue and Gold’s are popular as entertainment and can be seen at Busch Gardens and other   ------     They can be taught to perform ticks such as riding a bicycle or solving simple puzzles.

The Scarlet Macaw parrot is as popular as the Blue and Gold but not as available.  Size and personality are similar to the Blue and Gold Macaw parrot.

The Green-winged Macaw parrot is often confused with the Scarlet but they have a horn-colored upper beak with a black tip and a black lower beak. Green wings are also a few inches larger than the Scarlet.

The Military Macaw parrot is about 28 inches long and not as colorful as the others.  They make friendly and interesting pets,
if you have an opportunity to own one

Macaw parrots can make wonderful pets but there are some negatives. They have very loud screams and tend to scream in the early morning and early evening.  It is their way of announcing the day has begun or is coming to an end.  Macaw parrots also require a good size cage and need plenty of out of cage time. Macaw parrots are very entertaining and affectionate if you have the time to devote to them.
