Conures
There are many different types of Conures, they are not as expensive as the full size parrot and they are fun to watch and play with. The Conure looks and acts much like an Amazon. Conures have limited vocabulary and a shrill, piercing call.
The most popular varieties of Conures are: Sun Conures, Jenday Conures, Nanday Conures and Red-headed Conures.
Sun Conures: Are the most popular Conure. It is about 12 inches long with bright yellow color with orange, blue and green markings. There is a white circle around the eye with a black beak.
Jenday Conures: The Jenday is about 12 inches in length and have a bright yellow head, neck and abdomen. They have blue tipped tail along with green markings. Jendays are very playful and if purchased when young can develop a strong bond with their owner.
Nanday Conures: Nandays are easy to recognize because they have black heads. There is some red at the top of the thighs and pale blue across the chest. The rest of their bodies are predominantly green.
Red-headed Conures: are also easy to recognize because almost all of the parrots head except for the back of the cheeks are covered in red feathers. There are also some red markings on the edge of the wings.
Conures range in length from 9 to 14 inches. They are friendly and have many of the same qualities as the larger size parrot. Conures can be noisey and have a piercing call. If provided with toys and entertainment their screams and whistles should not present a problem. Conures are great chewers and should be provided with plenty of small sticks or wooden blocks to accommodate that tendency. As a companion parrot they are very affectionate and attached to their families. They do tend to bond with one person but if socialized properly will be accommodating of the other members of the flock.
