The World of Companion Parrots They're stunning, intelligent, entertaining and fun ….they're loud, destructive and pack a fierce bite. These are all qualities to name a few found in the world of companion parrots. There are 350 different types of species found in the parrot family. Macaws, Amazons, African Greys, Cockatoos, Eclectus, Conures, Lories and Lovebirds are the most popular in the companion parrot world. Cockatiels and budgies are also classified in the parrot family and make wonderful pets. Parrots are fascinating to people because of their intelligence and high level of curiosity about their environment. Some parrots are known as one person birds but this is based on who feeds them and cleans their cage. A well socialized parrot should be accommodating to the rest of their family. Parrots by nature are messy, noisy, affectionate, loyal and long lived. Much consideration should be given before purchasing a companion parrot. You should be making a commitment to the parrot and to yourself so that you will have a lifetime of happiness together. Choose the right parrot from the beginning, one that will fit into your lifestyle and you into theirs. Carefull consideration should be given to noise. Many parrots can be quite loud with their screams and whistles and probably would not be appropriate for apartment living. Cockatoos are among the loudest, Macaws are almost as loud followed by the Amazons. African Greys tend to whistle more than scream and speak at a moderate volume. Lories, conures, eclectus, lovebirds are all fairly quiet birds. Cockatiels and budgies are also quiet and some consider their whistles pleasant. Space should be another consideration. Cage size will determine the size of the bird. In most cases the bigger the better. Do you have a room large enough to accommodate the size cage say a Macaw or Cockatoo would need. All parrots, especially the larger ones will require time out of the cage. This would involve needing a play stand or something to keep the parrot safe along with toys to keep them entertained and accommodating their chewing tendencies. This is important so that the bird does not destroy your home. Parrots tend to shed/molt and some have a lot of dander. This might present a problem to someone who has pet allergies. This is more the case with the larger size parrot. When you go on vacation and see these stunning parrots who talk, do tricks and sit on your arm for a picture, one must realize someone has taken the time to train and socialize these birds. Do you have the time and patience to devote to your parrot. Consideration should also be given to price and diet. Parrots like to be part of a flock. They are affectionate and loyal to those they know and love. Parrots like to spend time with their owners and interact.
